Pre-plan A Funeral

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

What is a funeral service?

A funeral service, or celebration of life, is any sort of farewell where there is a coffin present. It makes no difference if the service is formal and religious and held in a church, or down at the local RSL or a golf club; if there is a coffin present, it is considered a funeral.

What is the difference between a memorial service and a funeral?

A funeral or celebration of life has a coffin present, so typically happens before a burial or cremation takes place.

A memorial service is a gathering, either formal or informal, to celebrate the person without a coffin present. Typically a memorial service takes place after a cremation or burial has occurred. Occasionally, the ashes of the person who has passed are present at a memorial service.

What is funeral pre-planning?

Funeral pre-planning involves sitting with a Funeral Director and choosing the funeral service you would like to have. You can nominate your preference for burial or cremation, your preferred venue, coffin type, flower favourites – just about everything short of booking the date and time.

It is important to note that pre-planning a funeral is not legally binding, and there is no cost involved in pre-planning your funeral.

What services does a funeral director provide?

A funeral director provides guidance, care, and coordination for every aspect of a funeral. This includes bringing the deceased into care, arranging the funeral service or celebration of life, handling legal documentation, caring for the deceased, coordinating with venues, cemeteries or crematoriums, and supporting families through each step of the process.

What happens in the first 24 hours after a death?

In the first 24 hours, a Funeral Director will help transfer your loved one into care, guide you through the next steps, and assist with any immediate decisions. You do not need to have everything organised straight away; support and guidance is available 24hrs on 02 4735 6900.

Can a funeral be personalised?

Yes, every funeral and celebration of life can be personalised to reflect your loved one’s life, personality, and values. This may include music, stories, venue choice, styling, or unique elements that create a meaningful and memorable farewell. We listen carefully to ensure each service is personalised and authentic.

What is a viewing and should we have one?

A viewing is an opportunity to spend time with your loved one before the funeral or celebration of life, either privately or with family and friends. Grief experts suggest it helps us say goodbye and begin processing the loss, but it is always a personal choice.
